What is the patient's usual body build?

What is Prakriti?

Prakriti is a person’s inherent Ayurvedic constitution: the relative proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha they are born with. Unlike day-to-day imbalances, Prakriti is considered stable through life. Ayurveda doctors use it to decide diet, lifestyle advice, treatment and dosage, and to understand which diseases a person is more prone to. Classical texts, including the Charaka Samhita (Vimana Sthana, chapter 8), describe how to assess it.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha: the three doshas

Vata (air and space)

Governs movement, including breathing, circulation, nerve impulses and elimination. Vata-dominant people tend to have a light build, dry skin, variable appetite, light sleep, quick activity and a tendency to feel anxious under stress.

Pitta (fire and water)

Governs digestion, metabolism and body heat. Pitta-dominant people tend to have a medium build, warm and sensitive skin, a sharp appetite, a dislike of heat, and a focused but irritable response to stress.

Kapha (water and earth)

Governs structure, stability and lubrication. Kapha-dominant people tend to have a broad, solid build, smooth skin, slow but steady digestion, deep sleep, good stamina and a calm response to stress.

How does this Prakriti calculator work?

The doctor answers 8 questions about the patient’s usual traits. Each answer points to Vata, Pitta or Kapha:

  • Body build
  • Appetite and digestion (Agni)
  • Skin type
  • Response to temperature
  • Sleep pattern
  • Activity and energy
  • Response to stress
  • Bowel pattern

The calculator shows the percentage of each dosha and names the Prakriti type: a single dosha (Vata, Pitta or Kapha), a dual dosha (Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha or Vata-Kapha), or Tridoshic (Sama) when all three are equal. Each result comes with a short general recommendation, and you can download it as a patient-friendly PDF report.

Prakriti vs Vikriti

Prakriti is the constitution a person is born with. Vikriti is their current imbalance, which changes with diet, season, age, stress and illness. Because this tool assesses Prakriti, answer each question based on the patient’s lifelong tendencies, not recent symptoms.

Who is this tool for?

It is built for Ayurveda doctors (Vaidyas), BAMS students and Panchakarma centres that need a quick, consistent Prakriti screening in OPD and a clear report to hand to the patient. To record Prakriti directly in each patient’s case paper, see the Ayumanager PRO Ayurveda EMR. For writing prescriptions, try our free Ayurvedic Prescription Pad.

Limitations

This is an 8-question screening tool for education and quick clinical reference. A complete Prakriti Pariksha by a qualified Ayurveda doctor examines many more features. The result is not a medical diagnosis and should not replace professional consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What is Prakriti in Ayurveda?

Prakriti is a person's inherent Ayurvedic constitution: the relative proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha they are born with. Ayurveda considers it stable through life, and uses it to guide diet, lifestyle, treatment choice and dosage.

How is Prakriti calculated?

Prakriti is assessed by examining physical, physiological and psychological traits such as body build, digestion, skin, sleep, energy, stress response and bowel habits. Each trait points towards Vata, Pitta or Kapha. This calculator scores 8 such traits and shows the percentage of each dosha.

What is the difference between Prakriti and Vikriti?

Prakriti is the baseline constitution a person is born with. Vikriti is the current state of dosha imbalance, which changes with diet, season, age, stress and disease. This calculator assesses Prakriti, so answers should describe the patient's usual, lifelong tendencies rather than current symptoms.

What results can the Prakriti Calculator show?

The result is one of seven types: single-dosha Vata, Pitta or Kapha; dual-dosha Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha or Vata-Kapha; or Tridoshic (Sama) when all three are equal. Each result includes dosha percentages and a short general recommendation.

Is this Prakriti test free?

Yes. The Prakriti Calculator is free and runs in your web browser with no installation or account. To download the PDF report, the doctor enters their name, clinic name and mobile number, plus the patient's name, age and gender for the report.

Can this calculator replace a clinical Prakriti assessment?

No. It is an 8-question screening tool for quick use in OPD and for patient education. A complete Prakriti Pariksha by a qualified Ayurveda doctor examines many more features. The result is not a diagnosis.
